There are many great movies in the world, and the genre of Westerns has evolved over the years. Spaghetti westerns, in particular, were incredibly popular because they were so original in their storytelling and filmmaking. A definitive entry in the spaghetti western subgenre, The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly follows three deadly men as they try to find buried treasure during the Civil War. This film spawned the Mexican Standoff trend, made Clint Eastwood a star, and gave audiences an iconic film score. A theme that often recurs in the films we have selected in this ranking.
The Godfather: Part II
The Godfather: Part II is the sequel to the critically acclaimed classic of the mafia. This sequel continues the character arc of Don Michael Corleone, showing the shady side of the mafia. Michael Corleone, who controls a vast empire, becomes increasingly distrustful and paranoid as he gains power. The film’s themes of greed, family values, and violent treachery have not lost their power and he no longer can cheer his brother or his family.
While The Godfather: Part II has been considered one of the best films of all time, it never matched its predecessor’s impact. The film was based on the original novel only half of the time, and the story was more exciting as a character study. The second film focuses on the younger Don Corleone and his brother Vito Corleone, who proves himself to be a worthy leader.
The Silence of the Lambs
The Silence of the Lambs is a suspense thriller that is a superb adaptation of Thomas Harris’ best-selling novel. It follows FBI trainee Clarice Starling as she pursues a serial killer. It stars Anthony Hopkins as brilliant psychopath Dr. Hannibal Lecter. While the movie is not without its faults, it still remains one of the best movies of the year. Despite the film’s flaws, it remains a must-see for fans of suspense and thrillers.
The Silence of the Lambs is a harrowing crime drama directed by Jonathan Demme. Written by Ted Tally, it is based on a novel by Thomas Harris. The movie was released on Valentine’s Day in 1991, and grossed $272.7 million worldwide. It was only $19 million in budget, but it became a worldwide hit. In its short life, the movie has won numerous awards.
Donnie Brasco
As far as gangster movies go, Donnie Brasco ranks in the top five, and for good reason. The film is based on the true story of FBI agent Donnie Brasco, who gets involved in the mob. Although it has a few problems, it’s still a solid watch and above average for its heart and acting. You’ll feel a connection to the characters and the story, and you’ll love how well the gangsters get off.
The plot revolves around a young FBI agent who poses as a jewel expert to win over Lefty Ruggiero. After gradually winning the mob boss’ trust, Donnie finds himself advancing in the organization, while still being separated from his wife and children. While the mob boss tries to make his life a little easier, Donnie’s friendship with Lefty gives him the chance to reconnect with his past self.
Infinity War
Infinity War has been dubbed the best Marvel Comics movie in history, and for good reason. The film introduces the MCU to many new characters, including the biggest villain of Marvel Comics. While there was much excitement around the movie’s release, fans were left with many questions. Thankfully, the filmmakers and writers did a wonderful job of explaining what Thanos really wants and how he came to be.
Unlike other Marvel movies, Infinity War is a huge ensemble piece that satisfies all the senses. While the film felt a little risky after the highly popular Age of Ultron, it succeeds in making the Marvel formula feel fresh. The newer heroes are introduced to the world successfully, while the older ones enjoy great chemistry and adjust to the new situations. This makes Infinity War one of the best movies of the year.
